Cantilever Fever

10/17/2008

I love a cantilever chair. When I was growing up we had a dining set with four of them upholstered in baby blue velvet.

Designed by Mart Stam in 1926 and imitated by countless modernist designers, the cantilever chair has no back legs and gets its support from resistant metal tubing shaped into a perfectly weight-balanced S-frame. The result is an awesome, landmark 20th century design.

I’ve been searching for a cool one to add to our living room for years. Leather originals can go for upwards of $1000, but I nabbed a mint white leather one at the Goodwill Thrift Shop by our house for $20.
